Flood Chronology of the Carson River Basin, California and Nevada

July 28, 2005

An intense summer convective storm hit the east side of Carson Valley on July 28, 2005 in the Johnson Lane area, producing 0.35 inches of rain as recorded at a rain gage located off of Fremont Avenue. This resulted in flash flooding in Johnson Wash, the main drainage in this residential district. While this event resulted in minor flooding compared to the last large flood in July of 1994 ( where flows were estimated at 1,400 cubic feet per second), runoff for this event was estimated at 210 cubic feet per second. Flow was contained in the channel in the upper reaches of the wash, however overbanking and significant flood debris accumulation occurred downstream in the vicinity of Johnson Lane and the Vicki Lane turnoff.
