Carson River Basin
June 1983
Rapid Warming Event
The snowpack in the Carson River basin as in much of the northern Sierra Nevada for May 1, 1983, was, on average, greater than 200 percent of normal. Rapid warming with temperatures exceeding 80 degrees by the last week of May triggered rapid snowmelt. Flooding was accentuated by floodwater releases from Lahontan Reservoir.
