Walker River Basin
Basin Description
The Walker River Basin covers about 4,000 square miles in west-central Nevada and eastern California, flowing from its headwaters in the Sierra Nevada to the terminus at Walker Lake. The headwaters are divided into two main drainages, the East Walker River and the West Walker River. The East and West Walker Rivers join in Mason Valley, just South of Yerington, Nev., to form the mainstem of the Walker River. The Walker River flows northward out of Mason Valley, past Wabuska, Nev and bends southward around Parker Butte. The Walker River flow through Campbell Valley and then enters Weber Reservoir. The Walker River leaves Weber Reservoir flowing downstream southward past Schurz, Nev. before terminating in Walker Lake, the Basin’s lowest point and a “closed” basin with no outflow or discharge except through evaporation.
More descriptive information on the Walker River Basin can be found in the Walker River Chronology available from the State of Nevada, Division of Water Resources (http://water.nv.gov/mapping/chronologies/walker/).
